ACEA offers members the opportunity to work on committees that improve our organization. We also have the right to appoint our members to committees that make decisions for our district. Here is a sampling of the work being done by your fellow ACEA members. Let your ACEA rep or the ACEA office know if you would like to join in.
Sick Leave Banks
SBAC employees have the negotiated right to join a sick leave bank. It is an important right. The members who serve on this committee have the great responsibility of reviewing applications and awarding sick days to those who have exhausted theirs due to catastrophic circumstances while maintaining a pool of days for those who will need them in the future.
Insurance
The insurance committee becomes educated about and makes recommendations concerning our insurance.
CREATE Council
The CREATE council is the state-mandated board that oversees professional development for our district.
Appraisal
This committee develops the methods and procedures for evaluation of employees and makes recommendations to the school board while following state mandates.
Textbook
Whenever new textbooks are being adopted by the district, employees who use those materials evaluate the choices and make recommendations.
Calendar
ACEA members work with district staff to create a calendar for each school year, including decisions on Flex Days and other days off. The committee makes recommendations to the school board.
ATAP
The Alachua Teacher Assistance Program is a union proposed program for teachers who need additional help in the classroom. Members of the committee determine placement in the program and appointments of consulting teachers.
During negotiations we often need joint committees to investigate questions that arise and come back to both sides with information and recommendations. Previous examples would include committees that investigated Early Release Wednesday and Alteration of Hiring Dates. Another example is our right for input on revisions to the Code of Student Conduct.
Collective Bargaining
Both ESP’s and teachers have groups that work throughout the summer to improve our contracts and increase salaries and benefits.
Membership
This committee works to increase membership in our organization and works to improve benefits for our members. It meets regularly throughout the year.
Various Event Committees
ACEA events like the Appreciation Dinner, the Legislative BBQ, the Retirement Dinner, and the New Teacher Happy Hour are planned and executed by our members. Each committee usually meets only a few times a year.
A-TIGER
This is the political action committee for our organization. All A-TIGER members are invited to the meetings held on the first Thursday of the month.
Elections
Elections for officers and other members of the Executive Board, held in the spring, are supervised by the elections committee.
Retirement
Retired members of ACEA are invited to monthly meetings of TRACE, our retirement group.
A-Tiger is the Political Action Committee (PAC) for ACEA. Since no union dues are used for political purposes, A-Tiger serves a vital service in helping ACEA support and promote political candidates and issues that directly affect our jobs. A-Tiger needs you! Dues are minimal, but the effect of those dues is great. Anyone at ACEA would be glad to talk to you about A-Tiger or you can read the brochure and join that way. Either way–join A-Tiger now!
If you are interested in actively participating in A-Tiger, download this brochure and fill out the included application.
You can then mail or bring the completed application to the ACEA Office:
